Mariano Cruz Jr.

Mariano Baluyut Cruz, Jr., affectionately known by those closest to him as Jun, Junior, Koyang, and of course, Lolo & Papa, passed away peacefully on March 26, 2024, surrounded by the loving embrace of his wife and family. Born in Tondo, Manila, Philippines on May 1, 1937, he was the eldest of the three children of Pabiana and Mariano Cruz, Sr. His life was a testament to love and resilience, marked by 57 years of wedded bliss to his beloved Virginia, and the nurturing of their three children, Edgardo, Lyzette, and Yvette. They found the ultimate joys in grandparenthood to Daniel, Taylor, Haley, Chloe, Claire, Troy, Jack(Tony), and Keana. After graduating from Arellano University in Manila with a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Jun’s scientific career path began at the agricultural chemical company Planters Products in Limay, Bataan. When he and Virginia and their family immigrated to California, he then worked for Chevron Refinery as a Research chemist for 22 years until his retirement. Jun may perhaps be better known as a “Jack-of-all-trades”. From his humble beginnings, where he diligently undertook odd jobs to help his parents support his family, he honed a myriad of skills through self-education. Whether it was mastering engine maintenance, undertaking construction projects, or sculpting landscapes, Jun’s hands were always ready to mend, create, or innovate. His signature phrase “Areglado!” (“Consider it done!”), became synonymous with his unwavering commitment to help others, embodying his spirit of generosity and care. Jun’s insatiable thirst for knowledge and a genuine desire to connect with people from diverse backgrounds fueled his passion for travel. Reaching 36 countries, he obtained a rich treasure of wisdom about human dignity and the common good which he passed on to his family. Beyond his talents and accomplishments, Jun’s essence was defined by his boundless compassion and love for those around him. He was not merely a man of skills, but a beacon of warmth and support, whose presence lit up the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him. He leaves behind cherished memories of his laughter, kindness, and unwavering love.
