Helen Lang

Helen Maxine (Wink) Lang was born in Holstein, Iowa on May 28, 1925, and passed away peacefully surrounded by family on March 4, 2024, at the age of 98. She was the third child of Fredrick C. and Edna F Wink. Helen grew up in Iowa and graduated from Holstein High School in 1943. After graduating Helen and her cousin Doris took a Greyhound bus from Iowa to Portland, Oregon. Helen got a job at the Vancouver Shipyards as a welder. After the war, Helen worked for the Bonneyville Power Co. While living in Washington, Helen met her future husband Oscar Lang. Helen’s family had moved to Fairfield, CA. During a visit with Helen’s family, Oscar applied for a job at Travis Air Force Base. Upon returning to Washington Oscar learned he was hired at the base. So, Helen and Oscar returned to Fairfield, CA. On August 23, 1947, Helen and Oscar were married. They had four children – Gregory, Jeffory, Vicki, and Kathy. They built their dream home in Cordelia, CA where they raised their children. Helen was a homemaker during these years. She enjoyed working in their large vegetable garden and her flower gardens were the envy of friends and neighbors. Helen was very active in her children’s lives. She always volunteered to be a room mother at Green Valley Elementary School. She was a Sunday School teacher at Trinity Lutheran Church. Helen was very involved in 4-H. She taught many members, including her daughters, the art of food preservation. Her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren are carrying on this tradition. Helen was also a member of the Ladies of the Elks. Helen loved camping and traveling. The family has many memories of the camping trips they took as children and the trips to the mid-west to see where their parents were from. After Oscar’s death, Helen spent many summers traveling and camping with her daughters in their RV’s. Last August Helen enjoyed her last camping trip with her daughters, her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Helen loved the outdoors and spending time with her family. Helen was preceded in death by her husband Oscar Lang, her parents, and all seven of her siblings Dorothy, Donald, Harold, Leonard, Frank, Mary, and Carol Ann. She is survived by her four children Gregory, Jeffory, Vicki, and Kathy. 8 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and 9 great-great grandchildren.
